Dear Editor,
I noticed that a team from the Carter Center had returned to Guyana. No doubt it is interested in elections in Guyana which the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has said could be held by March 2020.
The Carter Center is no stranger to delayed polls as it had experienced in Guyana how the 1990 elections were pushed back to 1992 to allow new voter registration, and for mechanisms to be put in place for credible elections.
The Carter Center has a proven reputation of helping to promote electoral democracy. It should not allow itself to be dragged into a scheme where elections, hurriedly done, could derail credible results.
The Carter Centre has a great track record of working with governments and civil society, and any role it has in Guyanese elections would be helped by respect for lawful authority, such a GECOM, which has sole responsibility over the conduct of all elections in Guyana.
Sincerely,
Indrawattie Hardatt
