‘Speedy Gonzales’ to spend next six months in jail

THIRTY-nine-year-old Bisram Paul was on Thursday sentenced to six months in prison in the hope that it will cure him of his penchant for speed.

The sentence was handed down by Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Providence Magistrate’s Court, where Paul was arraigned for dangerous driving.

It is alleged that on April 1, 2019, he drove motor vehicle, PKK 6473, along the East Bank Public Road, and in the vicinity of Diamond, in such a reckless manner as to cause serious injury to a number of persons.

To compound matters, it is also alleged that not only did Paul fail to render assistance to the injured on the day of the accident, but he was not licensed to drive.

As such, he was fined $40 000 and sentenced to seven days in prison for driving without a valid driver’s licence. He was also sentenced to a further six months in prison for speeding, in spite of his employer’s pleas for leniency.

According to Magistrate Latchman, the six-month sentence is for his own good, as it is intended to serve as a deterrent, so he won’t be inclined to speed again.
