A FORTY-one-year-old man met an untimely death following an accident on the Onverwagt Public Road on Saturday afternoon.  Dead is Joel Jacobs of Number 28 Village, West Coast Berbice (WCB).

According to police, around 15:30hrs on the Onverwagt Public Road, a hire car bearing registration HC 8140 was being driven by a 27-year-old resident of El Dorado Village, WCB, when it collided with Jacobs.

Police said investigations disclosed that the hire car was proceeding east on the northern side of a bridge, while the pedal cyclist was proceeding in the opposite direction on the southern side.

The driver alleged that while in the process of passing the cyclist, the latter suddenly swerved from south to north and collided with the right front of the car.

As a result of the impact, the cyclist fell onto the bridge and sustained injuries. He was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The body is presently at the Fort Wellington Hospital Mortuary awaiting post-mortem examination.

According to the police, a breathalyser test was conducted on the driver of the car and no alcohol was detected in his system. He is presently in custody assisting with the investigation.
