A 40-year-old woman who was allegedly arrested for wearing a pair of stolen slippers was remanded to prison by Senior Magistrate Alex Moore when she appeared in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on a charge of break and enter and larceny.
Shonette Gonsalves Sabola of Lot 82 Savannah Park Housing Scheme, New Amsterdam, is accused of breaking into the dwelling house of Daphney Pitt-Joseph and stealing one gold ring, a gold chain, a bag containing several documents, a five-pound tin of milk, a box of biscuits, a pair of slippers and cash totalling $280,000.
The incident was allegedly committed on December 10 at Pitt’s Lot 43 Stanleytown home. Pitt, a United Kingdom-based nurse, had returned home to bury her younger son, policeman Cardis Joseph, who died after he lost control of motor car (PPP 4196), which crashed into the side of the road at Aroaima trail, Region 10. It is alleged that after the funeral service and while the bereaved family was resting, Sabola reportedly broke and entered the family’s home and stole the articles.
Meanwhile, during her court appearance, the woman, a domestic worker and a part-time cook, claimed that she is a hard-working mother who works around the clock to maintain her children.
She vehemently denied statements by Police Prosecutor Bernard Brown, who told the court that the woman was caught wearing a pair of stolen slippers.
“I have me children. Me have three small sons. Me nah do dem things tha,” the mother said.
The magistrate upheld the prosecutor’s request to deny bail. Sabola was remanded to the New Amsterdam Prison where she will spend the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays, before returning to court on January 14.
