Chanderpaul, Barnwell half-centuries put Jaguars in control

THE Guyana Jaguars will head into the fourth and final day of their match against the Windward Islands Volcanoes in firm control after setting the latter 348 runs mainly through unbeaten half-centuries from Tajenarine Chanderpaul and Christopher Barnwell.

Guyana Jaguars resumed their second innings yesterday with the score on 115 for 3 with Chanderpaul on 29 and night-watchman, Clinton Pestano, yet to score. They then combined in the morning session for a partnership of 111 before Pestano fell for a well-played 69 (127 deliveries, 2x4s, 5x6s) with the Jaguars nicely placed on 225-4.

This brought Barnwell to the crease and he wasted no time in building another sizable partnership with Chanderpaul; the duo’s innings were contrasting as Chanderpaul was patient (reminiscent of his legendary father Shivnarine) while Barnwell was brisk.
When the Jaguars declared on 310 for 4 shortly after the dinner break, Chanderpaul was unbeaten on 84 (334 deliveries, 3x4s) and Barnwell 61* (2x4s, 2x6s) with a mammoth 347 run lead.

Batting a second time, the Volcanoes got off to a poor start as Keon Joseph had opener Tyrone Theophile out caught by Pestano for just 6. Volcanoes skipper Kirk Edwards was the next to go, becoming Pestano’s fifth scalp of the match; he was LBW for 4.
When play resumes today with opener Taryck Gabriel on 33 and Kavem Hodge on 9, the Volcanoes will need an additional 294 runs with eight wickets in hand while the Jaguars will be looking to wrap up the game quickly.

In the other match between Leeward Islands Hurricanes and Barbados Pride, the Hurricanes are on 165 for 9 in their second innings with a lead of 169. The batsmen at the crease are Jeremiah Lewis on 38 and Sheldon Cottrell on 6.
That match is evenly poised and today’s action will be full of intrigue.
