A father of four was on Wednesday remanded to prison by Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore for the possession of an illegal firearm.
It is alleged that Khayyam Ahmad, a mechanic of South Road Bourda, Georgetown, on December 1, 2018 at South Road, he had a .32 pistol in his possession without being a licensed firearm holder.
Ahmad’s attorney, George Thomas, made an application for bail on the ground that the said firearm was not found in his client’s possession but rather at the back of the vulcanizing shop where he works.
Police Prosecutor Warren Thornhill told the court that on the night in question, Police Constable Williams went to the vulcanizing shop where Ahmad worked and the men got into a heated argument. Ahmad left and came back with the firearm at his waist and continued his argument with Williams until a customer told him “Boy, you ain’t know is a police yuh talking to.”
Thornhill explained that Ahmad, after hearing that the man was a police, ran to the back of the shop and disposed of the firearm. The police were summoned and the firearm was retrieved. The prosecutor opposed to Ahmad being granted his pre-trial liberty, stating that the offence is a serious one. Magistrate Azore remanded Ahmad to prison until December 19.
