CITY Magistrate Faith McGusty on Monday released a 60-year-old Essequibo farmer on $100,000 bail after he appeared before her for stealing a $4M engine from a wreaked vessel along a sand bank at Tiger Beach, North West District.
Andrew DeFreitas of Covent Garden Grove, Essequibo denied the charge which alleged that between September 14, 2018 and November 29, 2018 at Tiger Beach, he stole a $4M engine along with two air boxes valued $1M from the wrecked vessel of Simeon Tudor.
The defendant’s attorney Everton Singh-Lammy made an application for his client’s pre-trial liberty and begged the court for his client to be granted self-bail.
However, Police Prosecutor Shellon Daniels explained that when the police arrested DeFreitas, he took them to an area and handed over the stolen items.
DeFreitas was released on $100,000 bail and had his matter transferred to the Chief Magistrate, Ann McLennan for December 7.
