SOESDYKE, Sophia, Uitvlugt, Timehri, Bagotville and hosts Den Amstel were the teams left standing, following the completion of the preliminary round of the Brian Tiwari 60th Birth Anniversary football tournament which kicked off on Tuesday at the Den Amstel Community Centre ground.

The tournament being held to celebrate Tiwari’s birth anniversary is expected to conclude this evening when the finals are held at the same venue.

In the opening fixture, Soesdyke tackle Sophia and this encounter is expected to provide the perfect setting for an exciting conclusion to the tournament.

Soesdyke’s chances of progressing to the latter stage will rest on the shoulders of players such as Roger Dey, Alvin Adams, Dwayne Booker, Tyrone Khan and Shane Meusa, while Sophia’s quest to advance depends on the display of Ernie, Simon and Peter Smith, Mervin Morris and Stephan Maycock.

Trayon Bobb

In the game to follow, Uitvlugt face Timehri. The West Demerara unit will be looking for solid performances from national player Trayon Bobb, Seon Bobb, Keon Duke, Daniel Floy, Lerone Jacobs and Shonol Smith.

On the other hand, Timehri’s ambition to move on will rely on how well Kevin Sobers, Owen Denny, Tyrone David, Travis Thornhill, Prince Ford and Samuel Steele perform.

In the other game, hosts Den Amstel are clear favourites to proceed, especially with the likes of national player Delon Lanferman, Leo Lovell, Kester Dundas, Ryan Hunte, Jeffrey Perreira and Junior Gordon in their line-up.

Bagotville’s aim to register an upset could only be possible through good performances from Ivan Metland, Tevon Anderson, Shokel Brisport, Orlando Junior, Keyon July and Stanford Souvenir.

Cash prizes totalling more than $150 000 and trophies will be up for grabs with the winning team set to receive $100 000 and runners-up $50 000, compliments of Michael Cummings.

Meanwhile, Tiwari’s two grandsons, Bradley and Kane Gabriel, have agreed to put up $50 000 winner-take-all prize for the winners of an exhibition tournament to be played on the final night between Mahaicony, Zeelugt, Plaisance and Timehri.

The tournament is being coordinated by former national player/ head coach Lennox Arthur.

Kick-off time is 18:00hrs.
