Dear Editor,
IN the Friday September 7, 2018 Stabroek News, there is a headline captioned, “Cop on drunk driving charge after fatal Mandela Ave accident.”
It is very nice to see the police force have one of its members before the court for such offences; I think it is a step in the right direction. This is saying to them that they must be responsible, since such behaviour will not be condoned.
However, it must be noted that while under the influence of alcohol he was involved in an accident and someone lost their life, yet he was only charged for driving while under the influence of alcohol.
I am kind of worried that that is the only charge he will get, and that that charge he got is only to give some measure of satisfaction to the public and the victim’s family.
I am certain that had it been the other way around, that person would have been charged for driving under the influence of alcohol and causing death by dangerous driving. And, who knows! There might have been many more charges!
While I do not know all the facts, I am getting the feeling that we will not get justice here. I am appealing to the new Commissioner of Police to ensure that justice is served.
Regards
John Allen
