SECURITY personnel at the Lusignan Prison opened fire on a person who tried to throw a black plastic bag over the fence in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.
The suspect, however, managed to escape. The package contained a large quantity of narcotics, tobacco leaves, mobile phones and other contraband.
Acting Director of Prisons Gladwin Samuels, said at around 02:15 hrs on Tuesday, an unknown individual was seen by police and prison ranks on duty at the north- eastern section of the holding area Lusignan.
He explained that the person attempted to throw a black plastic-wrapped parcel over the fence.
“Reports are that ranks fired at the individual who made good his escape. However, in the process, he dropped the parcel. A check of the area revealed 10 parcels as in photograph below, a camouflage hat and short camouflage pants,” Samuels said.
He explained that checks were conducted by both police and prison ranks of the adjoining village and access roads.
Unfortunately, he said, the individual escaped. When opened, the parcels contained 1002 grams narcotics, a large quantity of tobacco leaves, four cellphones without SIM cards, one charger, one earpiece and 33packets of Bristol cigarettes.
