A 28-year-old fisherman, who allegedly stabbed his ex-wife after she refused to let him kiss their three-year-old son was on Friday charged with attempted murder.

Ramsawan Singh, of Sea View Street, Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was remanded to prison until July 3.

Singh was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which alleged that on June 28 at Cornelia Ida, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded 27-year-old Geeta “Pinky” Deochand with intent to commit murder.
Police Prosecutor Vivian Adolph strongly opposed the man being granted bail, because of the seriousness and prevalence of the charge.

Adolph disclosed to the court that the woman has a restraining order against Singh, and he is prohibited from contacting the victim.
According to reports, Deochand, who lives at Cornelia Ida, and the 27-year-old suspect, who is the father of her child, have been separated for a while.

However, on Thursday morning, whilst the victim and her son were standing on the Cornelia Ida Public Road, the suspect approached them and asked to kiss the child, but was refused permission to do so.

It was at this point that he became enraged and stabbed her several times with a knife and ran away. He was later apprehended.
