CYCLING action returns to the West Demerara roadway for the 8th annual Powerade 46-mile race on Sunday. Action will pedal off at 08:30hrs from Schoonord (Demerara Harbour Bridge) and proceed to Bushy Park, East Bank Essequibo, before returning to the point of origin for the finish.
Jamual John, was the 2017 Open race champion, while other winners were Jason Cameron (Juniors), Junior Niles (Veterans), Keon Thomas (Mountain bikes) and Denacia Welch( Female category).
Apart from the top six finishers of the Open race who will be rewarded, prizes are also set for the top three riders in the other categories. Eight sprint prizes would be up for grabs during the 46-mile event.
Meanwhile the inner circuit of the National Park will come to life today, Saturday, for the staging of the 14th edition of the Universal Auto and General Supplies 11-race programme from 09:00hrs.
Hamzah Eastman will be defending his title in the feature 35-lap School Boys and Invitational event.
He won last year’s race in one hour, 17 minutes, four seconds, while Nigel Duguid Jr. who took the Junior division then has upgraded to the senior category. Ian ‘Deaf Boy’ Jackson took the Veterans Under-50 title.
Ryan Canterbury took top honours in the Mountain Bike race last year, while David Hicks will defend the 12-14 Boys race. Managing Director of Universal Auto and General Supplies and veteran rider, Shameer Baksh, will present the prizes to the winners at the conclusion.
