A COUPLE was recently freed of the charge of trafficking a 15-year-old girl for sex after the case was thrown out by Magistrate Esther Sam at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court due to insufficient evidence.
Businessman Mahadsa Thomas and Kenisha Hill were facing a charge which alleged that between February 1 and February 24, 2017 at Supenaam, Essequibo, they recruited, transported and harboured a 15-year-old girl for sexual exploitation.
The trial was held in camera and the duo was out on $500,000 bail each.
The couple’s attorney Dexter Todd, last Thursday after the prosecution closed its case, made a no case submission since he said the police failed to meet the necessary requirements to establish the facts to the case.
The magistrate ruled in the attorney’s favour and freed the two people.
According to reports, the businessman and boat captain from Supenaam were arrested by detectives following the rescue operation which took place on February 24, 2017, following a ‘tip-off’.
It was disclosed that persons notified the police ranks about the presence of the young lady who was reportedly being used for financial gains by the businessman and his friend. The teenager was taken for a medical examination at the Suddie Hospital where it was discovered that she has been sexually active.
