Bandit nabbed after shooting goldsmith during failed robbery bid

FIFTY-FOUR-YEAR- OLD Namedo Hilchand, sustained a gunshot injury above his right knee during a failed robbery bid at Welfare Street, East Canje, Berbice, at about18:40hrs on Sunday afternoon.
The goldsmith, who travels door to door in his car to conduct his business, is currently a patient at the New Amsterdam Hospital. Following the incident, a Police patrol from Reliance headed by Inspector Michael Newland, acting upon intelligence garnered, swooped down on a house at Second Street, Number Two Village, where the suspect was found hiding in a condemned fowl pen aback his parent’s home.
The suspect is in custody and is being processed to make an appearance in court later this week.

Reports are that on Sunday, Hilchand, of Lot 42 Experiment, Bath, West Coast Berbice, had moments earlier collected $2,000 from a customer, for whom he had made a gold band. He reportedly re-entered his vehicle and was updating his records when an unmasked, identifiable male pointed a rusty-coloured gun to his head and demanded that he hand over the bag. As the robber pushed hand into the car in an attempt to grab the bag, Hilchand is said to have pushed him away, resulting in him, [the robber] firing a shot at the goldsmith’s right leg.

The businessman, a licensed firearm discharged a round in the direction of the suspect but he managed to ride off on his bicycle. The weapon the robber used has not been recovered and an investigation is ongoing.
