THE trial against attorney-at-law Keisha Chase on a charge of causing death by dangerous driving, which resulted in the demise of a 47-year-old man in 2015, commenced on Monday before Magistrate Allen Wilson.

Chase is charged with driving motor vehicle PRR 8181in a dangerous manner, causing the death of Julian Leitch on November 10, 2015, at Duncan Street, Campbellville. She is currently out on $250,000 bail.
The trial commenced with the testimony of Pamela Leitch, the mother of the deceased, who explained that the incident occurred while her son was heading to watch the Diwali motorcade.

The woman said that about 18:00hrs on that night, her son left their Lot “C” Lama Avenue, Bel Air Park, home and said “Mommy, I’m going and see the light-up; I’ll be back soon.”
Mrs. Leitch stated that she became worried after several hours had passed and Julian had failed to return home.

“I decided to call his phone to find out where he was. A male answered and I asked him what he doing with my son’s phone. He then identified himself as a police officer and told me that my son was in an accident,” the woman said.
While holding back tears in court, Mrs. Leitch said when she inquired about her son’s condition, the officer told her he thought it best for her to come down to the hospital.
According to the witness, on her arrival at the hospital, her son had already died and his body was being transported to the mortuary.

Three other witnesses also testified during Monday’s hearing: Police Constable Carmichael, Constable Hicken and Inspector Reynolds.
The matter was adjourned until January 29.

According to reports, Chase fatally struck Leitch on Duncan Street, Georgetown. Leitch was attempting to cross the roadway when he was hit.
Police in a release had stated that the driver reported that she was proceeding east along Duncan Street, when she heard a loud sound. Upon investigating, she saw a man lying on the road.

He was picked up by public-spirited persons along with the driver and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital. He reportedly suffered multiple abrasions to his body and died while receiving treatment at the medical facility.
