A 42-year-old pedal cyclist, Desmond Grandasoult, of Dedication Place, South Ruimveldt Park, Georgetown, died after he was struck by a Route 40 minibus, BTT 8476 at around 08:45 hrs on Monday morning.

A police report stated that the minibus which was driven by Jamal John, 30, of Long Dam, Vergenoegen, West Coast Demerara (WCD), and the cyclist were proceeding south along Vlissengen Road. Grandasoult was on the eastern side of the road and in the vicinity of Eping Avenue and KFC, the cyclist attempted to cross to the western side of the road and in front of the minibus..

The minibus, the Chronicle learnt, collided with the rear of the bike, causing the cyclist to fall before running over him. The bus ended up in the nearby canal.
An unconscious Grandsaoult who was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) in a critical condition, died subsequently.

Eyewitnesses told the Guyana Chronicle that after the bus ended up into the canal and began to submerge, the driver came out and fled the scene. Shortly after, the alleged owner of the minibus arrived and he jumped into the canal to rescue the passengers who were still trapped inside.

The man also tried to salvage equipment that was inside the bus.
Investigations are ongoing.
