Truck driver gets one year for causing death charge

A TRUCK driver who was charged for causing death by dangerous driving was sentenced to one year imprisonment by Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It was alleged that Zafar Khan on May 3, at Fifth Street, Section ‘A,’ Block ‘Y,’ Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara, Khan, 28, drove GFF 9553 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Keturah Dalgetty.

Khan, a driver for a chicken-processing farm, pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to him on his first appearance in the city court of Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, who set bail at $500,000.
According to police reports, on the day in question, the driver was reversing his vehicle on the road when he hit Dalgetty, who fell and he rolled over her. When the driver realised what had happened, he placed her in a taxi and took her to the Diamond Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
