A TEENAGER is currently in police custody in relation to the murder of Haymant Persaud, who is the brother of Police Commissioner, Seelall Persaud.Commander of ‘A’ Division, Clifton Hicken confirmed to the Guyana Chronicle that the 15-year-old boy was nabbed during the wee-hours of Friday morning in Sophia, Greater Georgetown during an exercise by police.
Persaud, 51, of Affiance, Essequibo Coast, was stabbed to death on February 19, 2017 in the vicinity of the Stabroek Market Area. The Police Commissioner had positively identified the body of his younger brother at the Georgetown Public Hospital Mortuary after the police had issued a notice a few days ago, seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the body.
This newspaper understands that the 15-year-old was positively identified by a witness during an identification parade on Friday. The police however are still on the hunt for two other suspects, who are also fingered in the murder. It is believed that a woman is the ‘mastermind’ behind the man’s death.
Reports indicate that Persaud was on a ‘drinking spree’ in the vicinity of Stabroek Market when he was joined by the female, after which he was reportedly lured to a washroom in the area.
The 51-year-old was reportedly attacked by two men and stabbed with a knife by one the perpetrators. The robbers relieved him of his money and other valuables before making good their escape. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
