THREE-time Digicel Pro League champions Central FC will have to continue to wait to collect their million-dollar winner’s prize because of the Government’s payment schedule.
The 2016/2017 champions of Trinidad and Tobago’s professional league are also owed the balance of their prize money from the 2014/2015 season.
But, according Dexter Skeene, the Chief Executive Officer of the TT Pro League, this is not unusual.

“For those of us who have been in the league from inception, we understand that the prize monies are paid the year after and continuing throughout because if you understand how Government subventions (are) paid, it is not paid in the particular year. You get it whenever the Government has money,” Skeene told the Newsday.
Club owner Brent Sancho, while speaking to Sportsmax.tv shortly after the conclusion of the season, described the club as being in survival mode.

“We have had no real support from Corporate Trinidad and Tobago and inconsistent support from the government, so survival is key,” Sancho said.
“Even though we have won prize money– more than TT$ 2 million – we still haven’t received it for the past two to three years, so we have reached a stage now where survival is paramount for the club’s success.”
Skeene empathised with the club’s position, saying that the government will do whatever is possible to help.

“I understand Central FC. They are crying out. They want to be able to have the funds because they’re involved in the CONCACAF Club Championships as well. We’re trying to make every effort to assist them,” he said, adding that he wished the club well.
“We hope that they go out and represent us well. They’re one of our top clubs. They’ve won it three times, congratulations to them. They’ve done remarkably well given the circumstances and we hope that they go out and represent us in the (Club Championships) and help us to reach further than they have done in the past.”
