A DRIVER who collided with a pedestrian Saturday night on the La Parfaite Harmonie Highway, West Bank Demerara (WBD), is in police custody pending investigation into the man’s death. Dead is Rickey Manichand, called “Candy Man,” of Lo 487, Belle West, West Bank Demerara (WBD).
The police reportedly responded promptly and took Manichand to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Reports indicate that the driver who collided with the man on the highway reported to the police station hours after, when he gave a statement and is assisting with investigations.
Manichand’s reputed wife, Hardai Singh, told the Guyana Chronicle that he left home around 20:30hrs Friday evening to visit a job site where he had secured work on the West Coast of Demerara.
She said he would usually call her cell when he would sleep out, but although she did not see him return home Saturday night, nothing seemed amiss since he could have slept over at his employer.
Singh said that the father of her three children was a hardworking man who sold candy for several years. He was also a carpenter and tradesman.
“This is the first time that I know he was involved in an accident. I was shocked when I get a call that he died, because of some car that run into him,” she said, adding: “He is the breadwinner in the family, what will we do now, how can we deal with this now, we will need help, his brother said he will take care of all the funeral arrangements, but we need help.”
