Row over cellphone causes ruckus at NA prison

—several inmates wounded during fight

A FIGHT on Sunday over the use of a cell phone has led to several inmates of the New Amsterdam Prison nursing injuries.According to information Asif Hamid 22, of Corriverton and Tameshwar Jagmohan of Black Bush Polder were reportedly involved in a fight over a cellphone. Jagmohan is one of five accused in the Black Bush Triple murder.

A source told the Guyana Chronicle that Hamid and Jagmohan scuffled and during the fight Haniff dealt him several punches. The men are on remand facing murder charges at the penitentiary.

Meantime, the brothers of Jagmohan, after realising what transpired retaliated and launched an attack on Hamid who was sitting at a table with another inmate identified as Devenand Dhahari 18, of Betsy Ground, East Canje. The brothers Ramnarine Jagmohan and Neshan Jagmohan reportedly beat, stabbed and chopped Hamid with the use of an improvised weapon. The duo was charged with killing Davendra Deodat, 34, called ‘Dave’, Owner of Cool Runnings Trucking Service of Hampshire Squatting Area, Corentyne in October 2013.

Additionally, Dhandhari who is also facing a murder charge was in close proximity and was not spared the brunt of the attack as he was also beaten. After prison officers were able to break up the fight the men were rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where Dhandhari was treated and sent away.

However Hamid was admitted and remains a patient and is said to be in a stable condition.

Commander of B Division Ian Amsterdam told the Guyana Chronicle that statements were taken and investigation is in progress.
