WEST Demerara’s Oneka Fraser of District 3 has set a new record in the Teachers’ Over-40 discus throw. Her district will enter the final day of competition at the National Schools Championships safe in the knowledge that they have been putting up a sturdy defence of their title in the Teachers’ competition of the event. They ended the day in the lead with 214 points at the Guyana National Stadium.
As their teachers continued to excel in the field and on the track, District 3 continued to rake in the points and enter today’s competition as the only district to pass the 200-point mark. Their nearest competitors, South Georgetown (District 13), have just 177 points, while following not too far behind are Bartica (District 7) with 153.5 points and North Georgetown (District 11) with 152 points.

North West (District 1) have 143 points, closely challenged by East Georgetown (District 12), with 129 points and Upper Demerara/Kwakwani (District 10) with 101 points.
With double digit points are Corentyne (District 6) 93 points, East Bank Demerara (District 14) 87 points, and East Coast Demerara (District 4) 56 points.
In addition to Fraser who copped some of the big wins for District 3 were Kevin Paul in the sprints, and Alexander Clarke in the distances and Oneka Fraser out on the field.
Fraser flung the discus 22.97m to erase the seven-year-old 22.44m record that Neibert Hale set in 2009. She outdid both Cindy Bourne (17.62m), and Nima Flue-Bess (17.11m).
In the male teachers 21-30, Paul and Clarke took the sprint and distance doubles respectively. Paul yesterday clocked 23.5 seconds in the 200m to add to his win in the 100m on Wednesday.

In the 200m, District 11’s Floyd Phillips celebrated second-place after clocking a time of 24.1 seconds, while Roy Haney picked up six points for District 10 when he ran 24.5 seconds for third.
Clarke won the 1500m in a time of 5:14.8s surpassing the 5:15.0s that District 6’s Cleon Smartt clocked to gain second place. Another 30 seconds away Andrew Campbell finished in third.
There was also the Teachers’ Over-40 200m, won by District 3’s Kharlyn Henry in a time of 35.6 seconds.
