A man, who was wanted by the police, was shot during a confrontation with ranks on Thursday in Sophia. He has been identified as Andrew Smith of ‘C’ Field Sophia.This newspaper understands that Smith was wanted by the police for questioning in relation to a series of armed robberies within Sophia. Police sources disclosed that Smith, a known character,was picked up several times for questioning in relation to many armed robberies in that area,but he was released after many of the victims refused to give evidence.
This newspaper learnt that the victims were reportedly threatened by Smith and did not want to be harmed, thus their refusal to cooperate with police. According to a release, at about 11:15hrs on Thursday a party of policemen acted on information that Smith was spotted at Access Road, ‘C’ Field, Sophia and went to the location.
As ranks were nearing the location, the suspect whipped out a handgun and discharged several rounds in their direction. The release noted that the cops returned fire, hitting Smith in the upper left arm and left rib region of his body.
He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and was undergoing surgery up to press time. A snub-nosed .38 revolver, four (4) live rounds and two spent shells were recovered by the police. Smith is under police guard at the GPHC.
