Surinamese nationals on illegal entry charge

SURINAMESE female nationals Valderrrama Lamora, 25, and Dunis Salazar, 27, appeared on Monday before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, charged with illegally entering Guyana by sea on July 7 last, and disembarked at Charity, Essequibo without the consent of an immigration officer.They both pleaded guilty to the charge.

According to the prosecution, on the day in question, the woman entered Guyana by sea at the Charity ferry crossing, which is a port of entry, and did not present themselves to an immigration officer. They were later arrested and charged, and did not produce any documents to show that they had entered the country legally.

The Chief Magistrate has fined each woman $20,000, with an alternative of four weeks’ imprisonment.
