PRESIDENT David Granger and Jamaica Prime Minister Andrew Holness have committed to strengthening trade relations between the two nations.During a meeting at the Pegasus Hotel on Thursday afternoon, they held discussions on areas of agriculture, manufacturing and tourism, and deepened cooperation in defence and security, a release from the Ministry of the Presidency noted.

Saying he looks forward to strengthened relations with Jamaica, President Granger has pointed out that as founding nations of CARICOM, Guyana and Jamaica have a role to play in further strengthening the alliance of the regional body.

During the meeting, the two Heads of States discussed the possibility of having investment and cooperation in agriculture, manufacturing and other sectors, and President Granger has indicated that he would ask Business Minister Dominic Gaskin to follow up the discussions.

Even as Guyana moves in the direction of developing its eco-tourism product, President Granger has noted that this country can add to the region’s diverse tourism offering, but can benefit from some capacity building with regard to hospitality and tourism management.

Noting that Jamaica does have expertise in that regard, Prime Minister Holness has indicated a willingness to look at what support can be offered to Guyana. The two Heads of States also agreed to look for means to deepen and enhance security and defence cooperation in the areas of information-sharing and training and capacity building.
