Two boys, ages 2 and 4, died in a fire last night at the Drop-in Centre on Hadfield Street, Georgetown.
Information reaching the Guyana Chronicle revealed that the two boys were only taken to the Centre two days ago; they are yet to be identified. According to reports, the fire started at approximately 23:45hrs on Thursday night.
An eyewitness said there were screams from the children housed there and the fire trucks arrived some 10 to 15 minutes later but it was too late. While most of the children manage to escape, the two boys were trapped in the building. The top flat of the Centre was completely gutted while the bottom flat was partially destroyed.
Police cordoned off the area and a hospital ambulance rushed to the scene. The children were on the street looking on as the fire engulfed the building. The fire is suspected to be electrical in nature. The Centre is administered by the Child Care and Protection Agency.
The Guyana Chronicle will provide more details as it becomes available.
