HEAD of the Bermuda Football Association (BFA) Larry Mussenden, is eyeing the presidency of CONCACAF.The election for president of CONCACAF is scheduled for May 12 and Mussenden believes he has what it takes to remove the organisation from the spectre of corruption it has been shrouded in.
The need for a new president of CONCACAF has come up after its last three presidents, Austin ‘Jack’ Warner, Jeffrey Webb, and Alfredo Hawit, have been indicted by the United States Department of Justice for fraud, money-laundering and racketeering.
According to Mussenden, he has been the BFA president for a number of years, giving him the requisite experience of running a football organisation.
To add to that, Mussenden says, his experience as an Attorney General has meant he has a particular viewpoint that could be beneficial to CONCACAF.
According to Mussenden, CONCACAF is an organisation at its lowest point, but that situation gives it an opportunity to grow.
Part of that growth is expected to come from approximately US$10M that has been seized as part of the US Department of Justice’s investigation into corruption within FIFA.
Mussenden already has a plan for those funds to play a part in his leadership of a new CONCACAF.
“Thirty per cent should be used to develop various programmes, 20 per cent should be divided on a needs basis between the three unions, and the other 50 per cent should be divided equally among the 41 countries of CONCACAF because it should have been delivered to those countries in any event, and I will pledge to put this forward if elected,” said Mussenden in an interview with The Gleaner.
“I have had great encouragement from countries across the board and I feel very confident about the support ..I have a good plan, I think I can get the respect of our member associations, I can get the respect of the people that we have to do business with and the region on a whole,” he said.
