Motorcyclist succumbs to injuries

MOTORCYCLIST Julian Orlando Bacchus, fondly called “Jemma”, of 988 Bachelor’s Adventure, East Coast Demerara, has succumbed to head injuries he sustained in an accident that occurred more than a month ago. He died on Sunday while receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital. The 26-year-old Bacchus had been admitted into the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Hospital after the accident, but was later transferred to the High Dependency Unit (HDU) of that institution.

His injuries included head injuries, multiple fractures to the skull, and speech impairment, his mother, Allison Richardson Bacchus, told Guyana Chronicle on Monday.

Bacchus had been employed with Troy Resources as a wielder/ fabricator. He had left home on his motorcycle at about 20:40 hrs on February 7 to attend a cousin’s birthday party at Buxton, East Coast Demerara.

Shortly after, she received news that her son was discovered injured on the Railway Embankment at Bladen Hall, East Coast Demerara, a few villages away, where it appeared his motorcycle had crashed into a rail.

For the seven weeks Bacchus had been a patient at the Georgetown Hospital, “he was in and out of consciousness,” his mother said.
She, however, never expected him to die, since he had started showing signs of recovery and was expected to be discharged soon.

The young man was also scheduled to begin speech therapy next week.
His mother had spent the entire day with him on Saturday, and he had a craving for ice-cream. Early Sunday morning, his mother was sleeping when a nurse from the hospital telephoned and asked her to “come down to the hospital”.

The mother said while she thought she was going there to sign a document for further medical care, she received the shocking news of her son’s death.

She related that she was asleep on Sunday morning and had a dream of her son visiting her. In the dream, she asked him why he returned home when she was planning to visit him later, and he told her he had no need for clothing.

The mother said she immediately awoke and observed that it was 05:20 hrs. That was the very hour she was told that he had passed on.
