Man busted with ganja in bucket

A BERBICE man was on Sunday busted with 2 kilogrammes of ganja concealed in a five-gallon bucket.According to reports, police acting on information went to the New Amsterdam Market where the suspect was seen walking on the road. He was approached and searched and the plant was found in his possession.

The man was arrested and a test carried out on a sample of the contents of the bucket proved that the substance therein was cannabis sativa.

The illegal substance was weighted in his presence and he was subsequently taken into custody.

The Berbice River is said to be one of the areas in Guyana where much of the country’s cannabis is cultivated.

Police have on several occasions conducted raids at villages along the bank of the Berbice River and on many occasions found cultivation fields. These were destroyed.

It is believed that much of the cannabis produced in Berbice is sold in Georgetown, along the East Coast of Demerara and in Suriname.
