Two clothes vendors busted with over one kilo of cocaine were refused bail on Monday, January 18 by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Thirty-one-year-old Shemroy Robertson of Lot 101 Mandela Avenue and Odinga Chase, 29 of Lot 169 East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, were not required to plead to the indictable charge of trafficking cocaine.
Particulars of the charge stated that on Friday, January 15 at Princes Street, Georgetown, they had in their possession 1.156 kilograms of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
The duo was represented by Attorney-at-law, Mark Conway, who requested bail on the grounds that his clients have fix places of abode and do not posed as flight risk.
Meanwhile, Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) Prosecutor, Kunyo Sandyford-Thompson strongly opposed bail on the grounds that such an offence requires special reasons in order for bail to be granted.
Additionally, the Prosecutor noted that the investigators were unsure of the address given by Robertson, since there are witnesses who revealed that he never stayed at the address he gave to the ranks.
The court was also informed by the CANU Prosecutor that in the latter part of 2015, there were persons that were arrested at JKF Airport who gave signed statements that their facilitator was Robertson. She added that these persons are willing to give audio/video testimony against Robertson.
On hearing the grounds of objections, both men were remanded to prison and the matter was adjourned to February 15.
