A THIRTY-YEAR-OLD Meten-Meer-Zorg man, badly beaten and robbed of $130,000 during an altercation on Friday night, is now a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), nursing head injuries and in danger of losing his left eye.Surendra Persaud, also called Robin or “Pan Oil,” of Ocean Garden West, Phase III, Meten-Meer-Zorg,West Coast Demerara, has, for the last two days, been bleeding continuously from his right eye and has sustained cuts and abrasions to his face.
He is also bleeding from his mouth, which was bashed in by his assailants, whose names he gave as “Shiva” and “Robo” from the same village.
The victim, who can hardly speak in his present state, recalls that on Friday night, sometime after 23:00 hrs, he was in the company of two friends – “Teethsman” and “Fat Boy.”
He related that they were about to board a car to go home, when “Shiva” and “Robo” began taunting “Fat Man” and calling him names.
Persaud said that in an effort to save his friend the harassment, or any trouble at all, he put him into another car and sent him home.
But as Persaud and “Teethsman” were about boarding the first car, the two men began bullying them, telling them not to board the car. Persaud refused to pay them any heed and attempted to get on board.
However, “Shiva,” whom he claimed appeared bent on making trouble, lashed him on his head with a glass bottle, cuffed him in his face, then threw him on the ground and began stomping him mercilessly.
The men also robbed Persaud, who works on a trawler, of $130,000. This ordeal, he said, continued for 15 minutes, despite Persaud’s pleadings.
The wounded man recounted that when his friend “Teethsman” realised that he was in real danger, he dived to the ground and threw himself over him, to provide a shield.
But by then, “Fat Boy” had alerted the police and directed them back to the scene.
When the police arrived, Persaud was on the ground – battered, bruised and bleeding, but the men, on spotting the cops, bolted. Persaud was rescued and taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital. He was given initial treatment then transferred to the GPHC.
Shiva was arrested and charged. He is later to appear in the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrates Court.
