Police say football coach had ‘ganja’ in car

APPEARING before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday was 35-year-old Colin John, the coach of a teen football squad in Agricola. John, a resident of Eccles, East Bank Demerara denied that on November 29 at McDoom, he had 21 grams of an illicit substance for the purpose of trafficking.
Attorney Clyde Ford requested that his client be released on reasonable bail. He told the court that John was a father of two with no pending or previous matters.
The lawyer explained that at the time of the incident his client was the driver of a motor car and had just dropped off someone, when his vehicle was stopped and searched by the police.
Police Prosecutor, Deniro Jones objected to the defendant being granted pretrial liberty citing the gravity of the charge. He told the court that on the day in question John’s car was stopped by the police and he was asked to exit. Jones said that the vehicle was searched and 11 transparent zip-lock bags were found containing a quantity of leaves, seed and stems suspected to be cannabis. The prosecutor said that the defendant was told of the offense committed and then arrested.
The Chief Magistrate upheld the prosecutor’s request to refuse bail on the ground that no special reasons were provided to satisfy the court. John will return to court on January 16 for report.
