Guyana’s first world champion Andrew `Six Head’ Lewis was given a relatively easy opponent in his first fight after losing the WBA welterweight crown to Ricardo Mayorga. Lewis was fed Mexican Oscar Delgado on November 22, 2002 in Puerto Rico. The southpaw Guyanese needed only two minutes and 28 seconds of the first round to gobble up his Mexican meal as Delgado was Knocked Out. The Mexican had lost five of his last six fights while Lewis was coming off his first professional defeat.
In March 2002 Mayorga short circuited the entire 83,000 square miles of Guyana when he TKOed Lewis in round five to snatch the WBA title. Following the victory over Delgado, Lewis made a second attempt at a world title but was denied by Antonio Margarito, who finished off the game Guyanese in the second round. At stake was the WBO welterweight crown.
Also known as `The Albouystown Cyclone’ Lewis would later have three battles with compatriot `Deadly’ Denny Dalton. The first held in October 2005, ended in a technical draw while the second had a bizarre finish.
Lewis was leading on all three judges card in the fight held at the National Park in April 2006, but suddenly retired in the seventh round.
The former world champion claimed he urgently needed to use the toilet. He blamed the need to use the wash room on stomach discomfort brought on by a pre-fight milkshake given to him by trainer Maurice `Bizzy’ Boyce.
Lewis won the national super welterweight title in April 2007 following a unanimous point decision over Dalton.
