TEAM Gillette Evolution Orville Hinds closed the 2015 cycle season on a winning note yesterday by copping the 16th Annual Diamond Mineral Water sponsored 50-mile cycle road race yesterday in the West Demerara area.Hinds who crossed the finish line unchallenged in a time of one hour, 59 minutes 24 seconds also copped seven of the eight prime prizes that were up for grabs. The other prime prize was won by his team mate Akeem Wilkinson who finished fourth overall.
Marlon `Fishy’ Williams crossed the finish line three minutes behind Hinds to take the second spot on the podium, while Christopher Griffith placed third.
Paul Cho-Wee-Nam of Team Alanis finished fifth and Paul DeNobrega sixth.
Griffith was however adjudged winner of the junior category having placed third overall in the open category.
Andrew Hicks who won Saturday’s Payless Variety Store feature 35-lap event in the National Park had to settle for second in the junior category, while Nigel DeGrood finished third.
Talim Shaw won the veterans’ category ahead of Jaikarran Sukhai and Shameer Bazksh respectively.
The mountain bike category was won by Sherwin Forde. Second was Wayne Nurse and Third was Michael Holder.
After being sent on their way from outside the Wales Police Station, West Bank Demerara, Hinds and DeNobrega immediately went on a break and established it after a few miles into the race, but DeNobrega suffered a mechanical problem and Hinds continued to press on to keep the tempo up and singlehandedly went on to win by a very big margin.
DeNobrega did well to come back and occupy the sixth position.
The event was coordinated by national cycle coach Hassan Mohamed.
Demerara Distillers Limited’s marketing representative was on hand to witness the finish and made the presentation of prizes to the respective winners.
