Rockville Hotel of Bartica to observe World AIDS Day with four-mile road race

THE Rockville Hotel of Bartica will observe World AIDS Day with a four-mile road race titled `Run for the Rock of Life’ on December 1 in Bartica and the event is opened to athletes from all across Guyana.The event will get underway at 16:00hrs on December 1 from the four miles housing scheme junction on the Potaro Road and conclude at the entrance of the Rockville Hotel, situated on Third Avenue, Bartica.
According to a release, the event is being staged in collaboration with the Regional Administration of Region 7, the National Sports Commission and the National AIDS Programme Secretariat with support of the Athletic Association of Guyana(AAG).
The release added that the event has been adopted by the Sport and Cultural development committee of the Regional administration as the first major event of many planned programmes to be staged during the coming months, leading up to the celebration of Bartica Township status on April 23 next year as well as the celebration of Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary.
The release quoted the coordinator of the event, former national sports organiser and professional social worker, Ras Aaron Blackman, this event is expected to bring together the best of the country’s distance runners with the promotion’s aim of building and encouraging a sound athletic programme for youths of Region 7.
The age group categories to be contested are; male and female u-13, 15, 17 and 19, open male and female 40-45, 46-50, 51-55, 56-60, 60-65, 66-70 and 71-75.
The winners and runners up of each category will receive cash prizes, trophies and medals, while the first 20 finishers hailing from Region 7 will receive prizes donated by the Regional Administration of Region 7 and members of the Bartica business community.
The management of Rockville Hotel will present the first male and female athlete to cross the finish line with a special prize and entrance fee per athlete is $500. However, children attending school will not be required to pay an entrance fee.
Application forms can be uplifted from the Regional Chairman’s office Region 7, Rockville Hotel, Bartica and the Guyana Olympic Association office, High Street, Georgetown.
Entries close on November 26.
