THE annual seven-a-side football tournament to celebrate the birth anniversary of Georgetown’s Mayor Hamilton Green will continue today with six matches at the Den Amstel ground, West Coast, Demerara.Mayor Green who `dabbled’ a bit with the sport in his youthful days while growing up in the Albouystown community, celebrated his 81st milestone yesterday, and to honour him for his involvement and the development of the sport locally over the years, Lennox `Mullen’ `Cross Eye’ Arthur has been staging tournaments in Green’s honour, being a born and bred Albouystown resident himself.
The tournament kicked off on Sunday at the Victoria ground, East Coast Demerara with 10 matches.
Today, the Den Amstel ground will host six matches from 14:00hrs.
The opening match will see Goed Fortuin tackle De Kinderen while Stewartville clash with Bagotville 30 minutes later.
At 15:00hrs, Crane will face New Amsterdam and another 30 minutes later, Pouderoyen will face Wales.
At 16:00hrs, Uitvlugt comes up against Sara Lodge and half an hour later, hosts Den Amstel meet North Sophia in the feature game.
On Sunday, the tournament will continue at Victoria with the last 16 teams competing for places in the quarterfinals which will also be played at the Victoria ground.
The winning team in the competition will receive $200 000 and a trophy, compliments of John Fernandes Limited, while the runners-up will collect $100 000 and a trophy, compliments of the Department of Culture, Youth and Sport.
The third and fourth-place finishers will earn $70 000 and $30 000 and a trophy each, donated by China Trading and The Business School respectively.
The player scoring the most goals in the competition will receive a three-piece suite from A.H and L. Kissoon, while the top two teams will both receive 10 hampers from the Ricks and Sari Group of Companies.
