THE Mayor and City Council on Tuesday announced that it will soon move to establish an elite squad to fight crime and also a canine unit to augment police management of Georgetown. The announcement was made by Town Clerk Royston King on Tuesday when he swore in 28 new constables. King challenged the new constables to perform their duties at a very high level given that they are the face of the Mayor and City Council (M&CC). Being selected after a vigorous six months recruitment training course, the constables have taken up a challenge at a crucial time when the city is undergoing a transformation; as the M&CC works to restore Georgetown.
King highlighted that although they are not up to their full capacity as yet regarding city constables, they will be tasked with more policing duties rather than the previous security duties, which will be handed to security officers.
Classed as the oldest police force in the country, much is expected of these constables, and as such King made mention of the fact that, “we will be implementing a traffic management unit to control traffic in various sections in the city, particularly on the council roads.”
Additionally, he said that training will be given to city constables so as to formulate an elite squad to help in crime fighting and also so that they can establish a canine section. Currently out of the 28 new recruits some will be assigned to the anti-litter unit, whilst the others will enforce the by-laws.
