After months of planning, the highly anticipated Stag Elite League was officially launched last evening at the 704 Sky Lounge in Georgetown.
Eight of Guyana’s top clubs – Fruta Conquerors, Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Georgetown Football Club (GFC), Buxton United, Pele, Monedderlust, Alpha United and Slingerz FC – will do battle in what is described as the most lucrative football tournament ever held in the Land of Many Waters. Football’s top officials, participating clubs, media and sponsors all gathered at the Lamaha Street venue last evening where the grand launching was held, to hear how the league will transform the sport in Guyana.The tournament will kick off on Friday September 18 at the Leonora Track & Field and Football Facility with a double header. In the first game from 18:00 hrs, Pele will match cleats with GFC, after which the grand opening ceremony will take place.Following the speeches and display of participating clubs, pre-tournament favourites Slingerz FC and Alpha United are set to collide in the night’s second encounter.Ansa McAl under their Stag Beer brand, E-Networks, Courts Guyana Inc. and Hits and Jams Radio (94.1Fm) are listed as the League’s sponsors.More details about last night’s launch and the league will be published in tomorrow’s edition.
