AN accused serial carjacker was on Monday remanded to prison by Magistrate Ann McLennan in Court Two of the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court after he appeared before her to answer to three counts of robbery under arms in separate carjackings.
Twenty-four-year-old Mike Tyson (no relation of the former boxing champion), of 563 Constellation Street, Tucville, was not required to plead to the indictable charge. However, after Prosecutor Deniro Jones requested that the Administration of Justice Act (AJA) be applied, Tyson denied the armed robbery charges.
The court heard that Tyson, while in the company of another and being armed with a gun, on July 1, at Durban Backlands, Georgetown, robbed Eason Grimes of a motorcar valued $3.2 million, a cellular phone valued $20,000, a driver’s licence valued $2,000, a passport valued $2,000 and $34,000 in cash, all to a total value of $3,258,000.
It was further alleged that on Friday, July 3 at McDoom, East Bank Demerara, while in the company of another and being armed with a gun, he robbed Manesh Veersammy of a Toyota Premio motorcar valued $3.8 million, a GT&T phone card valued $200, a wallet valued $1,500, two stereo speakers valued at $200,000 and $10,000 cash, all to a total value of $4,011,700.
It was also alleged that on Monday, August 10 at Mc Doom, East Bank Demerara, while in the company of another and being armed with a gun, he robbed Lawrence Singh of a Toyota Spacio motorcar valued $2 million, a cellular phone valued at $4,500 and $10,000 in cash, all to a total value of $2,014,500.
Tyson’s lawyer Mr. Gordon Gilhuys explained that his client was arrested since August 10 and was kept in custody beyond the 72-hour detention period.
The prosecutor told the court that Tyson was arrested after a high-speed car chase with the police when the accused crashed the car and was captured. The accused carjacker sustained a broken arm and minor cuts and bruises in the crash.
The father of three was remanded to prison and will return to court on September 7 for statements.
