Breaking up of political meetings must be condemned

THE breaking up of political meetings by hostile elements associated with the APNU-AFC coalition should be condemned by all those who subscribe to a peaceful and democratic poll.

This type of behaviour is reminiscent of the days when thugs were used to harass and break up meetings as the Walter Rodney Commission of Inquiry established by President Donald Ramotar so painfully reminded us.

It is sad that the breaking up of a PPP meeting in South Georgetown took place just a day after the signing of the GECOM Code of Conduct by the competing political parties.

The APNU-AFC coalition cannot escape responsibility for such attacks on the democratic fabric of our society. This is not the first such attack against the PPP/C for which the APNU-AFC should make a public condemnation if they are serious about a peaceful election and if they are to remain true to the GECOM Code of Conduct.

The public has a right to know what the political parties have to offer in their bid to form the next Government on May 11 and they must be allowed to do so without let or hindrance.
