THE thousands of persons who congregated at Stewartville to listen to the leaders of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic were urged that on May 11, ‘let us celebrate a mudslide victory’.Chairing the Stewartville rally, Senior Member of the PPP/C and Chairman of the Progressive Youth Organsation (PYO) Irfaan Ali stressed that the Opposition supporters “torn down our flags but this remind us what they really are and we should never let Guyana go into the hands of these destroyers.”
Ali vibrantly explained that “the love you have for the PPP/C in your hearts it shows that we will never lose.” The Chairperson also noted that the PPP/C is the only established national party. Taking the supporters back to the 2011 General and Regional Elections, he declared that “David Granger said on the 1st January 2012, Moses Nagamootoo cannot be trusted, because he was a longstanding member of the PPP/C.” And now, Ali noted, they have accepted the same man, “comrades we cannot trust these people.”
He noted that for the last three years the collated Opposition in Parliament blocked every single developmental project that the Government had put to them. “They cut the sugar industry money; the rice money, the hospital money, now is the time to stop them.”
“Sugar is important for the PPP/C and the Government has been doing a lot and as long as you have a PPP/C Government sugar will stay alive,” Ali emphasised.
DEVELOPMENT OF AMERINDIAN PEOPLE
Dr. Tandica Smith, currently a young doctor at the West Demerara Regional Hospital, explained that under the PPP/C Government she has accomplished her dream of becoming a medical doctor. She related to the PPP/C supporters that “only this party has a true vision for the development of this country and the development of our young people.” Smith mentioned also that as a young Amerindian person, this Government has placed much emphasis on the development of the Amerindian people.
She alluded to the fact that the PPP/C values the contribution of their women folk and therefore saw it fit to have Elisabeth Harper as their Prime Ministerial Candidate. “The PPP/C has yet again given our women of this country a voice at the top. No longer are our young women hopeless.”
And according to young entrepreneur, Clinton Urling, “This is the party (PPP/C) that fought dictatorship and transformed our economy from ruins and this is the party that will take us into the future.” Urling also echoed the Chairperson’s recollection of the budget cuts but he noted that even though the Opposition set out to destroy the economy, “the Government still found ways to make this economy grow, comrades this is the party of the future.”
YOUNG LEADERSHIP
Urling mentioned also that some 50% of the party members and persons who appear on the list are under 45 years old. “The PPP/C just don’t talk, we have a rich history of young leadership in this country.”
“I have no doubt that this trend will continue. We have to make the right decision today and make sure the right people are in office to make the right decision,” he urged.
“APNU+AFC (A Partnership of National Unity and the Alliance For Change) manifesto tells you nothing and after three years of saying ‘NO’ to this country, they have no right to run this country. The PPP/C has a plan for this country – we must choose forward and choose President Ramotar,” Urling urged the supporters.
