GOLDEN Jaguars’ inspirational midfielder Konata Manning and his Bent Street teammate Daniel Wilson both had double strikes as their team defeated North East La Penitence 6-2, during the second night of action in the inaugural Petra Organisation/Guyana Beverage Inc. Busta soft shoe football tournament which was contested at the Georgetown Football Club last Saturday night.Also recording victories were West Front Road (WFR) ‘Gold is Money’ who defeated Stevedore Housing Scheme 3-1 in the final match of the night, after Cross Street, Festival City and Back Road had all chalked up victories in their opening match of the tournament which has a $600 000 first prize.
Bent Street and North East La Penitence faced each other in the fourth of six matches for the night and it was the eventual winners who scored first, courtesy of Sheldon Holder’s 2nd minute goal which was nullified by Shaquille Browne’s strike for North East La Penitence three minutes later.
Manning gave back the lead to Bent Street with the first of his two goals in the 9th minute and one minute later, Wilson cemented that lead with his first goal of the competition, before Carl Tudor ensured North East La Penitence took the Busta lemon-time break with a one-goal difference, after he pierced Bent Street’s goal in the 13th minute.
It was the last hurrah for North East La Penitence, as on the resumption of play, Manning and Wilson completed their double in the 19th and 25th minutes respectively, enabling Shevane Seaforth to confirm Bent Street as the winners, when he found the back of the net in the 26th minute.
In the first matchup of the night, goals from Sheldon Profit (3rd and 11th) and Shalomo Marks (18th), handed Cross Street a 3-1 victory over Queen Street, whose solitary goal was scored by their versatile striker Deon Alfred in the 2nd minute.
Reigning Georgetown Guinness ‘Greatest of De Streets’ champions North Ruimveldt started their campaign with a 1-1 draw with Globe Yard, as Lenrick Carrington (18th) and Kevin Lewis (29th) being the principals responsible for their team’s goals.
A Kevin Boters 15th minute strike was all Globe Yard needed to defeat West Back Road when the two met in the third game of the night and after Bent Street defeated North East La Penitence, Festival City met and defeated Kitty 4-1 in the night’s penultimate match.
Keith Fletcher (15th), Eon Alleyne (17th), Daniel Favourite (21st) and Stellon David (28th) were the scorers for Festival City, who were made to fight from behind after Sherwin Vincent scored Kitty’s lone and the game’s first goal in the 9th minute.
WFR ‘Gold is Money’ stamped their authority over Stevedore Housing Scheme to come away with a 3-1 win, courtesy of goals from Michael Oie (6th), Michael Pedro (11th) and Jamal Pedro (14th), with Eon Parks responding for Stevedore Housing Scheme in the 10th minute.
The action will continue tomorrow night at the Fruta Conquerors ground in Tucville, with six more matches, starting with Queen Street-Tiger Bay facing Stevedore Housing Scheme, Ballerz meeting Sophia and Alexander Village matching strides with California Square.
After the Busta break, the action resumes with Leopold Street versus Kitty, North Ruimveldt looking to improve when they face WFR ‘Gold is Money’ in the penultimate match, with the action culminating for the night when Sparta Boss face Charlestown.
Apart from the first-place prize, the second- to fourth-placed finishers will respectively pocket $300 000, $200 000 and $100 000, while in the group stage, the first- to fourth-placed finishers will respectively receive $30 000, $20 000, $15 000 and $10 000.
