An Inquest into the death of six-year-old Ajay Beharry, of 22 Sixth Street Islington, East Bank Berbice, revealed that while no one was criminally responsible for his death, the incident was due to negligence, but no one was criminally responsible. The Overwinning Primary School Student died as a result of cerebral haemorrhage and a fractured skull.
The inquest conducted before Coroner Sherdel Isaacs Marcus at the New Amsterdam Court revealed that on July 24, 2012, Ajay Beharry had lived with his foster father Maheswar Sookram, a taxi driver, his mother Celina Pitamber and two younger siblings.
At around 09:30hrs, Sookram removed the front wheel of his motor car in order to gain access to the cv joint which needed fixing.
Celina and Ajay, along with his siblings Avish and Ariana were all in the yard. Celina was about six feet away cleaning fish on a nearby bench, while the children were playing.
The side of the car was propped up after it was noticed that oil was leaking toward the front of the car.
Ajay was asked to bring a bowl. He did so and placed the bowl under the front of the car. However, Sookram did not know where the child went, and lowered the jack crushing Ajay under the vehicle.
