The GRCS was established in 1948 as a branch of the British Red Cross, and in 1967 after Guyana gained its independence the name changed from the British Red Cross to the Guyana Red Cross Society (Act No. 25 of 1967).
The aim of the organisation is to influence the behaviour of the people we work with through a better understanding of the fundamental principles and humanitarian values.
The GRCS helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are, and when the crisis is over, helps them to recover and move on with their lives.
It has been in existence for the last 66 years, and is moving from strength to strength as it resolutely pursues and lives its Mission Statement: ‘To improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the Power of Humanity’.
