TORONTO, Canada – Led by a scintillating unbeaten 217 by former Guyana and West Indies Under-19 batsman Hemnarine Chattergoon, Hawaiin Arctic Cricket Club (HACC) moved one step closer to retaining supremacy in the Scarborough Cricket Association (SCA) Premier League tournament which was set to climax here yesterday.
Chattergoon’s knock and another responsible innings of 65 by opener Reyaz Prahalad saw HACC romp to 355 for seven in their allotted 50 overs after being inserted by Bawa XI in their semi-final encounter, played at the Ashtonbee ground here on Saturday before a large and enthusiastic crowd. Bawa X1 could muster only 199 all out in 43 overs, losing by the large margin of 136 runs.
The elder of the Chattergoon siblings, who was once touted as a future West Indies player before migrating here, was in sublime form on a Summer-like day here as he delighted his many fans with an array of exciting strokes to all parts of the Ashtonbee ground, slamming 28 fours and three sixes while facing 157 deliveries.
The right-handed Chattergoon, who had set tongues wagging with a brilliant century for the West Indies Under-19 team against Pakistan at the Kensington Oval in Barbados before migrating here, was having an average season prior to Saturday’s knock with just one half century to his credit.
Entering the fray with the departure of his brother Harrinarine (13) and HACC 35 for one, the HACC skipper was in a no-nonsense mood, pulverising the Bawa X1 attack while adding 184 for the second wicket with the reliable Prahalad whose innings counted three fours and a six.
Bawa X1 were never in the hunt despite a robust 85 from opener Shabbiz which included seven sixes and four fours as left-am medium pacer Ravi Bodhoo grabbed three for 33 and spinner Mahadeo Moonasar two for 34.
HACC also made light work of Kokuvil in their quarter-final match-up, played the previous Saturday. Led by consistent knocks from Zaheer Allard (45), Harrinarine Chattergoon (42), Prahalad (40), the four-time defending champions reached 268 for nine in their 50 overs.
Kokuvil were skittled for 117 in 29 overs, going down by 151 runs. Mahadeo starred with six for 37 and Hemnarine Chattergoon took two for 32.
HACC are seeking an unprecedented fifth consecutive title and were down to face East West Cricket Club at the same venue yesterday.
