WHEN the starter sounds his pistol to signal the start of the 2014 COURTS 10K Road Race today, one person will be on the radar of every athlete competing – Cleveland Forde.
Popularly known as the ‘Little Kenyan’, Forde is the two-time defending champion of the COURTS 10K, which will coincide with the company’s 21st Anniversary celebration.
Last year, Forde ran a time of 33 minutes two seconds to finish ahead of Cleveland Thomas and Nathaniel Giddings and with this year’s prize money totalling $1.2M, one can expect fireworks from the start of the race which runs off at 06:00hrs.
The 10K race will start in front of COURTS Main Street Office, proceed north to Seawall Road, east along Seawall Road and continue east along the Rupert Craig Highway’s northern carriageway, turn at Church Road then proceed on the Rupert Craig Highway’s southern carriageway into Kitty Public Road, south on Vlissingen Road; west on Lamaha Street, south on the eastern carriageway into Main Street, before turning around at the Cenotaph to finish on the western carriageway of Main Street in front of COURTS.
While the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) was still calculating the number of entries, reports are that the number of participants this year supersedes that of last year’s.
Meanwhile being an advocate for healthy living, COURTS will also stage a 3K ‘Health Run/Walk’ which starts outside COURTS on Main Street, proceed north to the Seawall, continue along the Seawall, turn right into Camp Street to Lamaha Street, turn right and proceed west along Lamaha Street into Main Street.
The race will continue in the southern direction to the Bank of Guyana before turning right into Main Street, finishing at COURTS.
