High-profile prisoners Randolph Rodrigues called “Shoulders”  Jason McKenzie called “Psycho,” along with Colwin Cort called “Dutchie,” appeared before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs Marcus  under tight security at the Sisters Magistrates Court, on the East Bank of Berbice, where four joint counts of attempted murder, allegedly committed on fellow prisoners ,were instituted against them.The indictable charge was laid, after an intense police investigation; an inquiry from a specially assigned committee, and advice from the director of public prosecutions. The probe resulted from the May 23, 2014 gang- related melee at the New Amsterdam prison, which left four inmates with several incised injuries  and burns about their bodies.
The particulars of the charge stated that on Friday May 23, 2014, at Penitentiary Walk, New Amsterdam , in the County of Berbice, in the State of Guyana, the defendants unlawfully and maliciously wounded  four inmates, namely , Clarence Williams called “Wild Hog,” aged 41 years  and Kwame Bhagwandin, aged 32 years  , both of Mount Sinai, commonly referred to as Angoy’s Avenue, a squatting community located on the eastern fringe of the  New Amsterdam township; Abdussalam Azimullah called “Sato” aged 31 years, of Lot 183 Hampshire Village, and  Davendra  Harricharran, called “Bara” 27, of Nigg Squatting Area, both Corentyne coastal  communities.
Additionally, one of the alleged victims, Abdussalam Azimullah, who is incarcerated on a robbery under arms charge, faced an additional charge of felonious wounding committed on fellow prisoner Kevin James.
Police Sergeant Godfrey Playter, prosecuting, said the incident was a retaliatory act, after fellow inmate Kevin James was allegedly beaten earlier by Azimullah.
Consequently, the accused men who collectively faces charges of murder, and wounding, reacted,resulting in a violent brawl which left four wounded prisoners , who were rushed  to the New Amsterdam Hospital before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where several surgeries were performed.
Meanwhile, the defendants, were denied bail, and are expected to attend the New Amsterdam Court on September 30 for report.
