CARIBBEAN badminton champion Narayan Ramdhani and his partner Nicholas Ali took top honours in the men’s doubles category of the Guyana Olympic Association ‘Discover’ Open badminton tournament after the two defeated Jonathan Mangra and Noel Shewjattan 21-17, 21-19 when the tournament continued last Monday at the Queen’s College courts.
The next hurdle for the two will be the men’s singles title tomorrow, after both registered wins in their semi-final matches on Monday.
Ramdhani defeated Jonathan Mangra 21-10, 21-14, while Ali soared past Avinash Odit 21-17, 21-15, to set up their contest in the final.
The pair defeated Mangra and Shewjattan in their semi-finals matchup against William Holder and Avinash Odit that ended 21-7, 21-19, while Shewjattan and Mangra won their semi-finals 21-11, 21-10 against Steve Peng and Ian Xiong.
The pair now join title holder Priyanna Ramdhani who won the ladies’ singles category after she defeated Ambika Ramraj 21-4, 21-7 in the finals.
The national champion also triumphed in the ladies’ doubles where she teamed up with Ramraj to defeat Kara Abrams and Abosaide Cadogan 21-15, 21-13.
That leaves only the men’s singles and mixed doubles titles up for grabs, both of which would take place on Friday. The mixed doubles finals will see the Ramdhanis, Priyanna and Narayan team up against Ali and Ramraj.
The tournament which began last Saturday is one of a series of events the GOA planned during the month of June in commemoration of World Olympic Day. Players from Guyana and China participated. (Tamica Garnett)
