ATTORNEY-General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Mr Anil Nandlall has hauled the Guyana Chronicle over the proverbial coals over an article carried in the Friday edition of the paper headlined, ‘Nandlall expresses limited confidence in consultations for Service Commission’.He said that first off, the headline is “misleading”, as he not only “expressed support for the changes in the Constitution in respect of the composition of the Service Commissions,” but also “highlighted the democratic and inclusive ethos of these changes, in that they authorise the National Assembly to generate names, after consulting with representative organisations, to sit on these commissions.”
Further to that, he said, “I emphasised that the amendments also added meaning to consultation between the Leader of the Opposition and the President, making those consultations no longer perfunctory.
“However, I expressed misgivings about the provisions of the Constitution, which require agreement between the President and the Leader of the Opposition in respect of the appointment of the Chancellor of the Judiciary and the Chief Justice.
“I identified the absence of an agreement in relation thereto, since the coming into force of these provisions, as the basis for my apprehensions.”
The newspaper has since apologised to the minister for misinterpreting him, and in so doing adversely influencing public opinion on the issue at hand.
