Watchman granted $50,000 bail on wounding charge

A WATCHMAN was ordered to post $50,000 bail by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, on Tuesday, on a wounding charge. 

Suraj Seeraj of Second Street, Agricola, East Bank Demerara pleaded not guilty to the offence that said on May 1 at Brickdam and Cornhill Street, Georgetown, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Stanley Persaud.
Police Corporal Bharat Mangru, prosecuting, said that the virtual complainant (VC) and the defendant are known to each other and on the day in question they both were consuming alcohol at the corner of Brickdam and Cornhill Street.
The prosecutor said a heated argument over sexual activities developed between the parties, when Seeraj became annoyed and dealt the complainant a stab.
According to the defendant, he is a pensioner but is employed with Mr. Crane as a watchman. He said that on that day he was on his way to work when he stopped at a shop to get a few beers. He said Persaud was at the shop drinking with some friends when he started to call him names.
The prosecutor did not object to bail and the case was put off to May 30.
